Help me give my students paired texts. You may be asking, "What are paired texts?" Simply put, a fiction and non-fiction book covering the same topic...a fabulous way to learn!
Students at our school are enthusiastic about learning and appreciative of all we, as their teachers, have to offer them.
Our student population is culturally diverse, and over 50% of our students use English as their second language.
In fact, most parents do not speak English at all; I hold a majority of my parent conferences in Spanish.
Over 75% of our students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. Our population is very transient; I often lose and gain students during the school year, making consistency difficult.
My Project
When we pair texts, we are reading both fiction and non-fiction texts on the same topic. This is a wonderful way to learn as it engages all learners. I am hoping these books will allow us to recreate the MAGIC we are experiencing at the moment.
I never thought I would use the words: ENGAGED, EXCITED, AND LEARNING to describe students reading biographies, but that is indeed what has happened over the last weeks.
Having choice in what they read and finding interesting topics has made all the difference. Students want to read. Students want to learn.
This project will fund the purchase of EIGHTY books for my students. 40 topics...One fiction and one non-fiction book for each topic. "The Magic Tree House" does a fantastic job of drawing students in with wonderful stories and then getting them to learn with the non-fiction paired text.
