I am embarking on my 11th year of teaching, with 10 of these years being in kindergarten. I teach at a Title I school, where many of the students do not have the same opportunities with technology that other students have. Our kindergarteners come in with a variety of mixed abilities. Some students enter kindergarten with letter identification, sound identification, and basic reading skills, while other students are unable to identify any letters or sounds at all. Some students enter kindergarten being able to identify numbers and knowing basic addition and subtraction skills, while other kindergartners lack basic number sense.
Regardless of what level the students are on when they enter school, kindergarten is such an exciting time of growth - watching students transform into young readers, writers, and mathematicians.
The different levels, abilities, and interests of the students is what makes our classroom unique and special. We are one big family!
Through the use of Osmo kits, I hope to increase my student's letter and sound recognition, sight word recognition, vocabulary, spelling, and number recognition. Students will also increase their problem solving skills as they engage in STEM activities. Osmo kits will reach a wide variety of learners in the classroom, as it includes beginner to expert levels. It will help my students who lack basic skills, as well as push my higher-achieving students to increase and build upon their knowledge. Students will have the opportunity to work with a partner on Osmo during center time, and students will also work individually on Osmo as a remediation or enrichment tool. The students in my classroom will really benefit from this engaging, hands-on experience!
