5th grade is a challenging year for students and parents alike. For students, it's their last opportunity to really be a kid at school. Learning is still fun and they come to school to get away for the stresses of the world around them. For parents, their child is getting ready to move into a new chapter. It is an added stress when your child is a student with special needs...
...and when the rigorous content doesn't make sense, students begin to feel helpless.
I want to bring new and inventive ways to exploring mathematical concepts within my small group and guided math time. I feel these additional supplies and classroom sets of items will help students who need a concrete understanding of the topics we covering in our Texas 5th grade curriculum.
My Project
I want to be able to help me inclusion students who struggle with abstract concepts find new ways of making sense of math.
Manipulatives for all make abstract math concepts concrete.
Along the way this will help make math accessible for all students. Giving all students a starting point that allows them to excel and succeed. In Texas students are required to pass the mathematical STAAR and this will assist in progressing all students to meet the state standards. Help our classroom make a difference in the lives of our students and build their confidence in their mathematical abilities. Math is for all!
Dice and cards are the bulk of my supplies for this projects students can use these to create random facts. Game like headbanz with facts, and war are ways the cards could benefit my students struggling with learning basic facts. Dice could be used to randomize problems and assist with place value when placed in a pill organizer.
Another product we use often quickly is dry erase supplies such as sheet covers, markers and eraser. With these students can practice math in stations and I can assess students quickly.
Students love being able to differentiate stations with bright paper and would love to reward my students with a fun way to review for STAAR with a glow in the dark practice party which is why I have chosen to include the glow in the dark items.
