My students come from two different academies, one that focuses on global issues and one that embraces a classical education. Our class blends classical ideas, such as truth, beauty, and goodness, with global ideas, such as investigate the world and weigh multiple perspectives. One way to accomplish this blending of visions is through the arts and humanities.
Moving towards a humanities-centered model, our classroom is a place of reflection and creation, building the knowledge and skills students need to become global citizens who live ethically while taking action towards worthy causes in the world.
Although our students are a diverse group located in a large, urban high school, the smaller learning community model allows students to connect with each other as they focus on interdisciplinary connections, project-based learning, and service to the community. Our students are creative, interested in the world, embrace outside-the-box thinking, and are ready to make a difference locally and globally.
Our classroom is more than just a room, it stretches outside the four walls as we embrace the world and move to make a difference in society!
My Project
My students have chosen all the supplies in this wish list and written the words below. These students meet once each week during lunch to work on their scrapbooks and other craft projects. The Scrapbooking Club began with just a few students, but each week a few more kids join in. Not all of the students are scrapbooking, some are just joining in for the camaraderie, a place to go where they feel welcome. They talk, laugh, and make even more memories that will last long past the time they leave our school.
