Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a middle school in a large city. We are a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast, lunch, and supper. My students are amazing and eager learners, and I want to help them become successful, happy adults.
Most of my students are from the local area.
They have chosen to follow a marine science and environmental studies pathway for their middle school years. English is a second language for many of them. Their parents encourage them to learn as much as they can, while supporting the teachers any way they can.
My Project
Many students enter our middle school not knowing anyone. At lunchtime, they are welcomed into my classroom to socialize and have a safe place to eat. Some students like to play board games and others like to use their creativity. These bracelet and key ring making kits will allow my students to create a beautiful piece of jewelry while talking, eating lunch and making new friends. Using the special adhesives will allow the students to keep their bracelets and key rings forever without it degrading.
We have few rules but the students have made this a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
They know to help each other and keep all comments positive. The greatest moments occur when a normally shy student will need to explain or demonstrate a step in the jewelry making process to a group. It earns this student respect from his peers, gives him a chance to speak public in front of a group, and builds their self esteem.
Every child should see school as a positive experience. I have many students who join me for lunch and end up leaving with new friends, and greater self confidence. They also leave with a feeling of belonging to our school community. Finally, they have a good time at school!
