Making It in the Library: Enhancing the Library MakerSpace
My students need maker materials, such as LEGO bricks, duct tape, and cork, to support their creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
Our school is an academic, economic, and socially diverse school in the heart of Henrico County. Three-fourths of our students have applied for, and been accepted to, the international baccalaureate program. The other portion of the student community filters in from nearby neighborhoods. Our library is working towards creating a flexible learning commons to support the needs of all of our students.
A large focus of the library program is to build lifelong learners through authentic learning experiences.
There is research aplenty proving the importance of critical thinking and problem solving, and in our library, we are striving to create a collection of maker materials to promote hands-on engagement. Our library collection needs constant replenishment to support our students as they experiment, tinker, play with their ideas, and create their own learning experiences.
My Project
Every day, students come into our library to make. Kids love the freedom of coming up with an idea and then trying to make it come to life. Throughout the previous school year and summer, we, the librarians, have been working to develop a collection of maker materials that the students will find useful, but our collection is wearing thin.
Every child in the school can use this space and will be affected by this project.
We need enough materials to support the entire school population. Materials have been carefully selected to include the things that students use the most - LEGO bricks are always in high demand, and many of our items need replenishing, like duct tape, ribbon, cork, etc. These materials will assist in their future success, as students become empowered as critical thinkers and problem solvers. We want these kids to get excited about making!
