I have the honor to teach some of the most creative, positive, outside the box thinkers. These kids are amazing! I get to come to work every day and know that I work side by side with Artist... not when they grow up... Artist now. These five to eleven-year-old students inspire me with their actions, conversations, and energy. I'm so lucky to be able to manage an Art Studio for these inventive children.
In the Art Studio, student's have the opportunity to move, invent, create, and problem solve.
They drive their own learning. Choices are offered to guide their learning, but every student has the ability to create their own experience. This allows them to shine in the Visual Arts world in a way that complements their unique abilities and style.
My Project
As an Art Teacher, I work with all the students in my school. That is 850 students in a week, Kindergarten through fifth grade. One of the goals of my job is to assure that all students believe that they are Artist. I do this in many ways such as teaching Art of all processes, all mediums, and all subject matters so they can find an Art style that fits them. I also like to make sure that my students are introduced to Artist that 'look' like them. All genders, all colors, all background and cultures of Artist are highlighted in my Art Studio.
The fiber Artist, Billy Kheel was a participant on the show 'Making It' on NBC in the fall of 2018 and I want to bring him to inspire all 850 students at our school!
This show features crafters in art-based challenges highlighting the fact that crafting is a valued activity and for people of all ages and genders. Kheel is known for his 'gender-busting' role in the crafting world because of the subject matter he uses such as sports and fishing. I want to bring this role model directly to my students, giving them the opportunity to learn from an expert who is different than me. I want my students (especially, my boys) to see themselves represented in the current Art world. How better to do that than bringing in a pop culture icon from a current TV show?
The main purpose of this visit is to allow students to 'see themselves' in a role model. The side effect of this project is that students will be creating using fibers. We will create a collaborative project that will be displayed at our school for years to come.
