Mrs. Frost from Statesboro GA is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need fun, hands-on remediation materials for basic addition facts, as well as addition with regrouping.

"OK, let's look over your work. What is 6 +1?" I must admit I expected a quick response of 7 from my 4th grade student, but what I got was lots of blinking and a blank stare. I have several students who still lack basic number sense. How can I build them up when their foundation is weak?
I have a FABULOUS class of 22 fourth graders in Georgia.
We are a group 50% boys, 50% girls. I have a mixture of Caucasian, African American, Bi-racial, Hispanic, and Asian students. 1 child has qualified as gifted and 2 of my students are autistic. The majority of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch. They are an eclectic mix of students, but they blend well together. I haven't taught a class this large in many years, but with budget cuts come larger class sizes. It is very hard to meet everyone's needs when you have a larger class. There is a TREMENDOUS gap in mathematical ability in my room (2 students place close to high school ability while 2-3 are placing closer to 1st grade level).
It is my hope that these resources will make learning fun for my students. They understand that their math skills are weak. They don't know how to improve and I know that shoving worksheets their way is not going to help at all. What they need are hands-on materials that they can work with during their enrichment time. They need these materials which will make them feel successful. They need a stronger foundation with basic math facts so that I can build them up.
"I believe that our background and our circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become." My mom had me when she was 16 and my parents didn't finish high school.
I am supposed to be a nobody, but because of the love and nurturing of a teacher I realized my potential. I teach at a high poverty school and I "get" what my kids are going through. All I need now are more resources to get THROUGH to them. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
