Making Innovators With a Portable Maker's Lab!

My students need a steel chest to store our STEM Maker's Lab tools, as well as hand tools and craft supplies to construct the engineering projects they need to complete their science experiments.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My STEM students are creative and driven innovators who are asking for the tools to carry out their engineering designs and scientific experiments. These are urban, at-risk students who attend a Title I school, but they strive to reach amazing learning goals. In my classroom, I try to create an accepting environment where my students feel safe to explore their interests, collaborate with new people, and learn to accept failure sometimes.

My goal is to foster my students' curiosity.

These students come from many different backgrounds, but most are sheltered and haven't had many opportunities to apply hands-on practices to their learning. I want to offer them the chance to do something new and exciting in the classroom!

My Project

These students need supplies to give them the opportunity to design and create innovative solutions to science inquiry experiments. Our school cannot dedicate the space for a true Maker's Lab or Maker's Space, so we want a portable version that the students can access for the engineering aspect of their projects. Some experiments they will perform include a water testing ADI, designing a garden with a compost system for our school, launching bottle rockets with chemical reactions, creating miniature scale airbags, and creating a hot/cold pack to keep brown bag lunches at the optimal temperature. These are just a few examples of the plethora of ideas I have for my students.

Providing my students with these tools will allow them to fully explore their interests and engage their curiosity.

The portable cart will house various handheld tools for students to use, such as screwdrivers, hammers, saws, sandpaper, paint, etc. The students collect recyclable materials from home and use these tools to turn them into engineered products.

My goal is to create innovative thinkers who leave my class with strong 21st century success skills and an understanding of how science works. The best tool I can give my students is the ability to think critically, and by having these resources I can make my students think beyond pencil and paper, and actually apply their ideas with true engineering projects.
