My students are second graders who are beginning a new journey in a new school with new friends! Last year our district closed several elementary schools and a middle school. The middle school is reopening as a large elementary. Students are coming from the schools that closed as well as another school in the district. Staff and students are beginning new together.
My classroom is focused on giving students freedom to research, design, create, and learn based on individual interests.
There are many learning choices throughout the day as well as flexible seating. I want my students to find passion and feel safe diving in to that passion.
My Project
The materials requested in this project will allow our class to house a makerspace. Students regularly engage in activities that involve research, design, and creation. In order to truly create, students need to have a variety of materials at hand. Many materials; such as, paper towel rolls, straws, craft sticks, and tape, will be gained through parent donation. Our room needs storage to organize these materials.
A makerspace allows students to explore passions and learn through creation.
Students are often asked to tinker with materials in order to create. For example, students had to create an instrument to measure the wind direction. Students also participate in Genius Hour. This is time during the day to research and learn about their passion. Many students choose to create and build.
The bins on my list are sturdy and will hold a variety of materials for students to choose when creating. The shelves will keep everything in a central location. The adhesive labels will allow us to label each bin with the contents in order to stay organized.
