This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come to their neighborhood school in Southeast DC every day with a smile on their face. Our school guides them through their learning and gives them 3 meals a day. We work hard, learn a lot, and always make sure to have fun during our 8 hours together.
For many of them, their day has only started when they go home to more hardships and responsibilities than any 3rd grader should face.
Despite their personal struggles, my students show up every day and are excited to learn. At the end of every day, no matter how exhausting a day it was, I cannot help but sit back and admire the tenacity of each and every one of my wonderful students.
My Project
My student need indoor games and activities to play with on the days we have recess inside due to the weather. Being in DC, there are days in the winter when the temperatures drop so much that the children cannot go outside to play, as well as times when it rains for days, which also means indoor recess. Being a new teacher and working in a high needs school, I currently do not have any fun activities or manipulatives for my students to play with on the days when recess has to be indoors.
It is important for children to have time to relax their brains and move their bodies every day, even on the days when recess is indoors.
All of these games are hands-on and promote learning through play. The items like Connect 4, Marble Run, and Gear Builders allow the students an opportunity to work and play together while thinking through tasks and strategies. These fun items will make the indoor recess days so much more enjoyable for my students!
