Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a reflection of the neighborhoods they come from in Chicago: 85% Latino, 13% African American and 93% low income families. Many of them enter high school with math and reading skills that are 3-4 years below grade level, but they come to my school with the dream of being ready to succeed in college when they graduate. They work extremely hard from freshman year until graduation and their growth is amazing! As a school, we have found the right combination of discipline, love and high expectations to provide the students with a rich and rigorous learning environment.

Many of the students have to leave home very early every day to commute to school by bus or train, yet most stay late for enrichment or one on one tutoring in their teacher's office hours.

They are willing to put in great effort to reach their goals. Their work pays off as many of them achieve over 6 years of academic growth before they take the ACT as juniors. Today, over 80% of our graduates are first generation college students.

My Project

Homework has always been apart of school. There are only a limited number of hours in the school day, and like all teachers, I know that when my students leave my math class they still need independent practice to hoan their skills and to find out what's missing from their understanding.

Thanks to today's technology, online homework gives students access to practice problems with immediate feed back, the chance to try again and it requires students to do their own work!

Not all students learn at the same pace and the internet offers assignments taylored to their specific needs.

Homework is only a learning experience if it is actually completed by the student and if they receive feedback when they make an error. Unfortunately, all too often worksheet homework assignments are not completed accurately and independently. Also it is impossible for me to grade each paper assignment and give timely feedback. Online homework options such as Kahn Academy require that students log on and personally complete the assignment. Also they will receive immediate feed back if answers are incorrect and are provided a link to a reteach lesson followed by a new homework problem to try again.

As I make the switch to online homework next year, it is essential that I have Chromebooks available in my classroom. That will allow my students to work on homework during office hours or during class if they complete the daily class work.
