My students need a class set of "Number The Stars" to help enhance our study of World War II and the Holocaust and to help them truly understand the impact these events had.

I teach fifth grade in a Title One public school. This means that the majority of the students in our school live at or below the poverty level. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. While a lot of my students come from two-parent homes, many of them come from single parent homes. I also have students being raised by grandparents and other family members. Many of them come from homes without computers and very few books. Despite these obstacles, my students are bright, curious and eager to learn. They are proof that with the necessary materials and a positive learning environment poverty doesn't have to be a deterrent to a good education.
My students have a lot of interests.
They love science, especially doing experiments. As their confidence has grown this year they are beginning to really love math. Nonfiction, especially biographies and anything science related is their favorite things to read about.
My students need a class set of "Number The Stars" to help enhance our study of World War II and the Holocaust. This novel will help them to see the courage so many people showed during this time by risking their lives to save others.
I want my students to understand we cannot forget the past if we hope to keep history from repeating itself.
I will also use this novel study to help improve my students writing skills as they write about and describe the theme, main idea and compare, contrast and analyze the characters. This novel study will also help to improve the vocabulary skills of my students.
