My students need 8 high-interest, photo-rich non-fiction book titles, including "Ancient China," "American Revolution," and "Archeology," to increase their desire to read, pass their Regents exams, and overcome their learning challenges.
Do you remember when you were a student? Were you ever forced to read the most b-o-r-i-n-g book on the planet when you were in school? Imagine struggling to compensate for learning challenges and ADHD and trying to succeed in school, but only having a few books available and outdated ones at best.
This is the life of many of the almost 200 special needs students at our school.
They are inner-city high school students living in one of our nation's toughest neighborhoods. Most of them hope to be the first person to graduate from high school in the family and hopefully attend and finish college. Nearly one hundred percent of them live below poverty level. The overwhelming majority come from broken homes, foster care, or group homes. As their resource teacher, my job is to help our most learning challenged and disadvantaged students work through their difficult lives and discover a path to success. My students do not have access to modern drama to appreciate the evolution of this important art form. I teach English at a high school in urban New York. My students have extremely low reading levels and benefit from high interest, low level materials. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide our students with the materials and resources they need to continue to succeed.
My Project
My students need 8 high-interest, photo-rich non-fiction book titles, including "Ancient China," "American Revolution," and "Archeology," to increase their desire to read, pass their Regents exams, and overcome their learning challenges. Your donation will provide my students with books that will engage them and excite them about reading and learning about history. They will be able to travel through time and speak with some of the most influential people who have shaped our world ... all through books. You will expose my students to different worlds as they examine beautifully illustrated cross-section photos taken from both up-close and afar, and first-person accounts of historical events. I do not want my students to suffer defeat because we do not have the money to get the materials they need. Give my students the gift of success by providing them with the texts they need. Allow my students to compete in this already competitive educational system by exposing them to more than just the status-quo.
We need your support to make it happen.
Help us to provide learning experiences and opportunities for those most in need. These books will be put to good use with students who cannot afford to buy their own. Help us to open doors and improve our students' reading levels by introducing them to books and history they'll love ... with pictures.
