Making History Come Alive Through WWII Literature

My Project

I have the best students in the world! I work in a high-poverty school where our opportunities are sometimes limited but my students strive for the best no matter what they face. Last year, we began looking at WWII and the Holocaust. They knew next to nothing about the war when we began and through reading The Boy In the Striped Pajamas, they became sponges. They have read The Tattooist of Auschwitz now and cannot seem to get enough. Their minds are engaged, they are seeking more information even on their own, and I believe I have started a fire for learning and history that I hope never goes out! They have asked, even if they have to continue after school ends, to be able to read Cilka's Journey now as well.

Cilka is just a character in a story now, but they want to make her come alive and know her story as well.

By purchasing this book, we will be able to extend their understanding of WWII, the Holocaust, and compassion that will serve them the rest of their lives. I yearn for them to know and understand history as well as deepen their love of literature. With this book, I can make both of those things happen.
