This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school and enter my classroom not knowing much history and they also are not excited to learn history. They think of history as notes and defining key terms out of the textbook. My goal is to make history fun and make it come alive. I am finishing up my third year teaching and I am also the soccer coach at my school. My students are amazing.
They come from many different backgrounds and deal with things in their home life that I could not imagine at 15 and 16 years old.
One student came to me and was not his normal cheery self. He said he did not sleep last night because the cops got called to his house since his mom and step dad were fighting really bad. I let him sleep all of class and allowed him to take home his work to finish there. I appreciated him coming to school, but I also understand that his lack of sleep was not him up playing video games. My students also deal with a lot of death due to gang and drug violence. Despite these circumstances, they persevere and bring joy to me.
My Project
I want to share my love of reading to my students. Being at a Title I school, my students usually do not grow up having the love of reading like I do because they did not have the opportunity or means to go to the library or even have books in their household.
I believe it is incredibly important for students to realize how great reading is and that it is a way to transform history and think about it in a new way.
This project would help my students understand the Atlantic Slave Trade and the impact it had.
