Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future" (Roosevelt). That is precisely what my school's hands-on math lessons do. These lessons will give my students individualized instruction and active problem solving skills.
My students attend a public school in the state of California and they come from predominantly low income families.
100% of my students received free lunch.
My students are enthusiastic about learning and always try to apply their learning to their real lives. Unfortunately, most of my students live in high poverty. Their parents work very hard to provide the best education for their children; however, they can not afford to have any technology at home. Many of my parents do not have a computer at home. When they constantly have to make ends meet, supporting education at home takes a back seat. Food and shelter is their priority and even then our staff and administrators reach out to community associations to help the students' home living conditions. As students come to our schools, teachers and staff make sure that they are provided with essentials. Our students get to be kids again and are able to focus on their learning without any worries.
My Project
The math tangrams and pattern blocks stamps and templates will be used every day for our math lessons. Many of my students lack basic math skills so in order for them to feel successful. These stamps and stickers will be used as part of engaging games to practice with each other as a math center. So far this year, my students have regularly used templates (broken and borrowed), compasses (rusted), geoboards (on loan), and pattern blocks (musty and discolored). As the year continues, they will repeat practice with these items on a weekly basis and will incorporate the use of all other kit materials at least once a day. It will be a pleasure to have ample and new materials as they work through their individual lessons, partner practice, and small group work. Our curriculum is structured for hands-on practice of complex thinking and problem solving that encourages adult-world math application. They practice and demonstrate problem solving skills with the materials in these fun templates.
Donations to this project will impact student learning and math practice every single day.
My students need the physical tools to engage in the learning and practice I am asking of them within each lesson. It is difficult for an entire class to share just a few materials, especially when those materials are old or broken. I will be able to use these tangrams and pattern stamps year after year; they are not consumable materials and thus will benefit students' math lessons for many years to come.
