Many of my students struggle to visualize and understand fractions. Fraction tile manipulatives are critical to my instruction and provide concrete, tangible ways for students to compare, order, and add and subtract them.
I work with students in 5th and 6th grade with have learning disabilities in math.
I always begin my unit on fractions by allowing students to explore the relationship between fractional amounts using fraction tile boards. The students always enjoy the opportunity to use manipulatives to guide their learning. I am always amazed at how much the students are able to discover about fractions when they are allowed to explore using the fraction time. Currently, I only have 3 fraction tile boards in my classroom; this means that students often have to share. Additionally, the boards that I have do not include tiles for 7ths and 9ths. This limits the types of examples I am able to use with students when we begin comparing, adding and subtracting fractions.
My Project
Having enough fraction tile sets for each student in my math group will make teaching and learning fraction fundamentals much easier for all of us. Each student will be able to use the tiles to compare fractions, find equivalent fractions, and add and subtract fractions with common denominators. These are foundational skills that they need in order to building number sense and lay the ground work for more advanced learning.
Having one fraction tile set for each student in my classroom will make learning fraction basics more accessible for my special education math students.
All students, but especially students with math disabilities, benefit tremendously from visual and tangible tools.
