Making Flexible Seating an Option for Every Student!
Help me give my students more flexible seating options and dry-erase clipboards! The table and clipboards will be great for buddy reading and small group work. Flexible seating is a great way to implement student choice!
I am a special education teacher in a second grade inclusion classroom in Carteret, New Jersey. An inclusion classroom consists of both general and special education students. My room is filled with a variety of different learning levels and academic goals.
The majority of my students are both visual and hands-on learners.
Each student in my classroom arrives to school eager and ready to learn. Due to the many different learners in one room, their methods and environment in which they learn best varies greatly. My co-teacher and I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met!
My Project
This school year, my goal is to slowly transform my room into all flexible seating options to increase student learning! My students were fortunate to receive two of these tables recently from Donorschoose, but each table only seats 4 out of the 16 students in the class. Currently, the students rotate weekly, making it "fair" that everyone gets a chance to partake in flexible seating every month. This table sits four students comfortably and can be raised and lowered in height.
Being able to change the height of the table allows for different seating options, specific for that child.
Whether they chose a desk chair, cushion, crate chair, or just want to sit on the floor; this table allows that to happen!
My students absolutely love student choice and flexible seating. I would love to be able to implement more options for my students within my classroom. Having a third round table will mean that four more students can enjoy flexible seating more frequently! After seeing my students' eager faces after seeing the two round tables, I can only imagine how excited they would be to know that they had another round table to learn at.
Flexible seating is a huge component in my classroom. The students love to grab a comfortable mat and work on the floor, or lean against a large fuzzy pillow when working on the rug. The students will be able to use these dry erase clipboards when working in their flexible seating spots!
