Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are so many things that go into one day of second grade. It's imperative that each moment is used to its fullest extent. The morning, when the kids are just coming in, is one of the hardest times to fill effectively. Differentiated morning binders are the answer!
My students are some of the coolest people you will ever meet.
They are seven or eight years old and of diverse backgrounds. They are smart, bilingual and a lot of fun to work with. I teach at a Title I school where more than 80% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. But, my students don't let these "disadvantages" stand in their way. They are eager to learn and love school (most of the time).
My Project
My idea is to use the binders, cardstock, trading card pouches, zipper pouches, wet erase markers and sheet protectors to maximize each minute to create morning binders that review math and reading skills. The math portion will consist of place value, money, time, adding and subtracting. These are skills that are imperative for them to master before entering 3rd grade and foundational for future grades. The reading section will review sight words, rhyming words and letter formation (for student's who are new to the country). The best part is that I can tailor them to each student's needs and adjust them as the year goes on changing activities to continue interest and learning.
Many of my students enter 2nd grade behind in their learning.
Every minute counts. With fun practice, custom-made for each student's needs, I am hoping to strategically close those gaps by practicing these skills every day. By filling in these missing pieces not only will their learning improve but so will their self-esteem.
