Students are highly motivated, and we encourage them to set goals of post-secondary education - college or university - but for many, the goal may be out of reach for them financially and/or because the fear of culture shock may be too much for them to overcome.
College-going culture and mindset are important for first generation students.
I would like to continue to provide them writing skills by effectively using office supplies and resources, providing printed works, to support and encourage habits of life-long learning.
Students need to see the power of the printed word on the page, and these supplies will make classroom work (editing and revisions) immediately accessible to students and peers during collaborative exercises. Dry erase markers will supplement editing skills in real time when essays are projected onto white boards for all students to see.
Students will understand that their words are powerful, and for others to feel that power, first drafts and editing skills need to be sharpened during class time activities.
Peer and collaborative editing practices will encourage all students to practice and enhance these skills of literacy and authorship.
