Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an Economics teacher at Richmond High School in Richmond, CA. I am a new teacher to the school and while the area has a bad reputation, I have encountered great kids who want to learn and really value their education.
Teaching Economics to teenagers is an interesting task because they are often apprehensive about the subject matter and don't necessarily see the connection to their lives. Economics is particularly important to students in Richmond who may not have the same social, educational and economic support that helps lead to successful futures. In two separate activities, I try to present them with interesting practical views of economics, and the theory based economics that are necessary for higher education.
One project involves reading books related to Economics, books that will grab their attention, but still relate to their life and the world we live in. Some of those titles include: Fast Food Nation, Nickel and Dimed, The Working Poor, and Freakonomics. The second activity involves learning about some of most famous economic thinkers in the history of the world. I introduce a project where the students create a presentation on one chapter of a book called "The Worldly Philosophers" by Robert Heilbroner. Then the students present and teach that information to their fellow classmates. Over 140 students will participate in these activities.
These resources will enable my students to get a fresh look at Economics and really increase their handle on the subject matter.
