My students are enthusiastic and eager to learn about our friends that live in the ocean. They also love to do some hands-on activities where they create models of the ocean and its inhabitants. Part of the reason why we teach Marine Biology is to make the students more aware of how our lifestyle as humans is negatively impacting the marine environment in general. Materials of any kind would help the students to not only learn kinesthetically but also to allow them to make connections with marine organisms and to hopefully bring some organic solutions to the problems of pollution.
My Project
These materials will help my students to bring the ocean into their classroom. It is important that students do not only see ocean organisms as pictures in a book or in a video. They must look at them up close. Fleeting images are not easy to build empathy with, but we believe that when a student takes their time to put an organism together and they see the finished product they have a better connection and understanding for the creatures that live in the ocean and thus hopefully speak up for them in terms of bringing solutions to the human impact problem on the ocean and its inhabitants.
