Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
While my school is labeled as "moderate poverty," 90-100% of my students are on the free/reduced price lunch program yearly. Year after year, at least 85% of my students are eligible to receive bus transportation from across town, where they live. Some of my students are responsible for themselves after school until parents are able to return from work after dark. A few of my students dress, get themselves to get ready for school, and get on the bus without the help of a parent because their parents have early morning working hours.
No matter their lives at home, my students come to my class with smiles on their faces, eager to see what learning I have on the agenda for the day.
My students are eager to learn and eager to please. I would like to be able to make their time with me in the classroom as safe and happy as possible. They deserve it!
My Project
This year, we are moving forward with balanced literacy in my district and I am amazed at how much growth I've seen in my students from only the beginning of the school year. I've seen students come to me as non readers, waiting and watching the clock for independent reading time. They curl up on my carpet, stretch out on my comfy chairs, and swivel on my stools while pouring themselves into their books.
My students absolutely love books about Science, so I have requested a high interest book that correlates to each of the units that I teach in fifth grade.
I have also chosen books that will allow students to experience things that they may not be able to experience in person, such as landforms. My students are English Language Learner students so providing a picture rich environment is crucial to their English language development.
