This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a second year kindergarten teacher at a school with a diverse population. We serve middle-class students, military students, and low-income families. No matter the background, my students come to school ready to learn. They love to learn new things, they love to read, and they love to explore. It is my job to make sure this zest for learning never dies. This year, I have incorporated many out-of-the-box experiences for my students, and they have blossomed right before my very eyes!
They continually surprise me on a daily basis, with their ability to learn and grasp concepts.
They have learned how to code a Wonder Dash Robot, create a map for Ozobots, code Spheros, make gears move, create videos via a green screen, and create 3D projects! If it weren't for them, I wouldn't have the courage to dream and grow as a teacher! Because of them, I am trying new things, and they are excited to be a part of it! I wouldn't change my job in a million years!
My students are strong, independent, loving, and courageous. They aren't afraid of challenges and learning new things! They have truly left an imprint on my heart!
My Project
Kindergarten is a place of learning and discovery. Kindergartners love to learn about new things, and teachers love to make experiences that will connect with the real world around them. I am excited to begin my journey into the world of financial literacy. Going through my belongings, I came across a large bin of pretend coins and money, and I decided I would like to give my students an allowance. With their allowance, they will pay "rent," buy groceries (their snacks), pay doctor bills, and "buy" things from the classroom store. This concept will be tied in with our study on wants and needs that we have been discussing in social studies.
Kids today do not know what it is like to earn money for things, so with this project, I plan on changing that way of thinking!
I plan on introducing this unit, when I read the books "Wants and Needs," and "Daphne's First Allowance." Once my students have a foundation of earning money, I will introduce the games "Life," "Monopoly Jr," and "Allowance." My students will play these games in order to understand the concept of money: how to save it, how to spend it, and how to invest in it. In order to give them that hands-on-experience, I am requesting a store, baskets for shopping, wallets to save their money, and items to purchase from the store.
