Help me give my students parachutes, ribbons, scarves, balls and hoops so that they can learn rhythm, form, dynamics, and tempo, by connecting music and movement together!
My students are curious, energetic, and excited learners that range from 5 to 12 years old. About half of them are low income, and many have been affected or displaced by Hurricane Harvey and are still recovering. (My family and I have also been affected, losing our entire house and belongings to the flood.) We have become so much more than a school community through all of this, we have become a family. My students inspire me and everyone around them with their willingness to give, their positiveness, and their strength.
Now more than ever, my students need a way to express themselves, a way to encourage their creativity, promote communication, and find a way to build their self confidence....I know that we can help them find all of these things and more through music.
Music is a universal language. It has the ability to draw people of all abilities, all cultures, and all walks of life together. Hearing our children sing together, listening to them playing a piece on instruments, and watching them dance is one of the most beautiful experiences we could ever hope to create.
My Project
It is hard to listen to any type of music without moving in some way. Maybe you tap your feet or snap your fingers, or just nod your head. In the school setting, most physical movement is thought to be reserved for PE, but music class in the perfect place to give students the physical movement they need while teaching valuable music lessons.
There are so many ways that movement can be used in the music classroom to not only develop motor skills and promote fitness, but also to teach and develop music concepts such as rhythm, tempo, dynamics, and form.
By using props such as balls, parachutes, hoops, and ribbons, students find new ways to express themselves. Their movement becomes an extension of how they feel the music inside. They are able to tell the difference between largo and presto. They can bounce the steady beat. They can work together to move a parachute to the pitch or with the form of the music. When students connect music to movement, they experience it in a whole new way!
