My Students

My students are individuals with visual impairments or blindness. Many of them have additional concomitant disabilities that further complicate their experiencing the world similar to their sighted peers. Providing academic rigor is a rewarding challenge, but with the new focus on SEL needs for our students, there is a clear need to focus on teaching students what they need to know to recreate and relax after a hard day.

Often, in our focus on academic rigor, we forget that everyone needs hobbies, and for a large number of students, music fills that niche.

My Project

The goal of this project is to provide students that have visual impairments and blindness access to skills necessary to read and write music. This will provide students access to the knowledge necessary for them to enjoy playing music instruments and perhaps pursue music as a vocation. Braille music curricula emphasize the use of keyboards as part of the instructional sequence along with solfege and singing.

We forget that students with visual impairments who excel at music still need to know how to independently read and write music, same as their sighted peers.
