I am blessed to teach 24 kindergartners in a Title I school. I have 10 boys and 14 girls in my class. Eighty percent come from single parent homes. My school is a small rural school, where most families live at or near the poverty level. Eighty percent of my students live in homes where parents only have high school or GED educations. The majority of my parents do not have any extra funds to be able to help out in their child`s classroom. Our community is made up of a lot of families barely getting by.
Many of my students come to school with little exposure to books and language.
I need to provide books at home for my students. This project will help provide many language experiences and books that the children can take home to read.
My Project
The ink, paper, colored pencils and card stock will be used so my students can write their own books. They will be allowed to take their books home so they have books at home to read. My students will write and draw their own stories using the materials provided in this project. They will be able to print their stories and pictures to help illustrate their stories. The students will learn how to type, print and use images from the Internet. My students will also learn how to put a story in sequence. This activity will also help the students learn how to follow directions. My students will share their stories with the class so this will allow for real life language experiences.. This activity will encourage the use of talking and writing in complete sentences.
I am excited about this project because the books the children make at school will be taken home to provide reading material for home use.
I am very eager to share this learning opportunity with my class!
