My students need read aloud books to enjoy. I love getting the children excited about reading. Very few of my students can afford a book of their own, they love to engage in these stories.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every day, my students face the challenges unique to living within underserved homes where food is a genuine commodity and clean school clothing that fits properly is a privilege. I am a teacher in West Philadelphia, where all of my students eat a free breakfast and a free lunch in school because they would otherwise go hungry in their homes. It is within this daunting classroom setting that my passion for teaching evolved from providing general education to wrapping around my student body in ways that pushes my children to expand their minds beyond the socioeconomic boundaries of living in urban poverty.
Although this may sound like I work in a third-world country, I am a mere kindergarten teacher in West Philadelphia, where most of my students’ learning takes place in my classroom.
Every September, I open my door to children who enter like sponges; eager to absorb new information, excited to learn, and more than willing to explore the world around them.
Each one of my students comes to me with a story overwhelmed in tones of never having enough at home. It is this void in my students’ lives that drives me to give these children everything I
My Project
As a kindergarten teacher I get to experience joy through the eyes of 5 year olds. My students love to listen to all kinds of adventures! Then it comes time to turn and talk to their neighbor about the different parts of the book, the conversations I get to hear are so amazing and interesting.
My students are intrigued, and inquisitive; asking very curious questions and are always involved in the story.
It brings me so much joy to know my students are getting read to and exposed to various texts. I try my best to have books around so they can share in the reading experience.
