My fifth grade students will be embarking on a new experience this year! They will be moving from room to room for subject areas. Students will come to me for one section of their Reading. During the day, I will be able to impact about 150 students with Reading instruction.
My fifth grade students come from a low income home environment, typically with limited access to books.
I plan for my classroom to become a safe environment where they can escape into a good book.
My Project
Students are amazed by the story of Wonder. We read it as a read aloud to the class in Fifth grade. I would love for each student to be able to use a copy in my classroom in order to follow along while I'm reading. There are parts to the book that need to be seen, as well as read. The story would have a greater impact for them if they could follow along.
In order for students to be kind, you must teach kindness.
We used the text, Wonder, in my classroom in order to teach how to treat others. This project would allow each student to fully engage with the book, and pull examples out of the book. Currently, we have one copy for the classroom and students only listen. I know that each student being able to experience a copy in their hands would pull them in even more!
Part of my project also includes Auggie & Me and 365 Days of Wonder, which are complementary texts to Wonder. They would help students to extend their thinking and keep them motivated to read!
