My students need flexible seating options in order to engage in their personal projects. I am creating a "Maker Space" in my classroom so that students are able to engage in creative pursuits during free time.
Wissahickon Charter School is a public charter school in Philadelphia, PA. As a school community, we believe that the social-emotional development of each child is just as important as the academic content that we teach. My classroom community is made up of 27 students. On average, 81% of my students receive free and reduced lunch. Typically, between 4 and 7 students receive learning support for learning differences.
School should be a place where children are honored for who they are and encouraged to become the critical thinkers we need for a respectful, peaceful, and engaged society.
As an educator, I work with my students to create a classroom environment where every child feels a sense of social belonging so that they are able to take the risks that are needed to learn new skills and achieve their dreams.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting are part of a larger effort that I am making to engage all types of learners throughout the school day. Through my own professional development, I have learned about the importance of offering choice throughout the school day. During our daily schedule, there are ample opportunities for students to do independent work, but I have not had the ability to offer them choices about where to work. The Surf Portable Lap Desks and the ALPS Weekender Seats will enable my students to have flexible seating during independent and small group work, especially during Writer's Workshop and Reader's Workshop. This is important because not every student works well sitting at a desk in a small group. The Lap Desks and Weekender Seats will enable students the ability to work alone on the carpet and will give them the experience of figuring out how they work best.
The school day is a highly structured environment; children need time to create, problem-solve, and explore the world around them.
My students need materials that will engage them in creative problem-solving. The IQ Builder STEM kits, Legos, and Pipe Cleaner Set will be used during "Maker Time" and indoor recess. Each of these materials already has a "home" in my classroom so that students can access them during our morning "Brain Break" and during silent time, which happens after lunch. These materials can be used for ongoing projects that help to stretch students' thinking without the direct support of a teacher or adult. I am hopeful that these materials will encourage some new scenarios that students will need to problem-solve independently in order to build their mindsets.
