I am a teacher in a rural elementary school. My teaching position is as an English as a Second Language Teacher. I teach reading in small groups of K-2 students from 4 classrooms and co-teach with 4 classrooms in grades 3-5. I have tried to make great choices on the lessons and activities I teach, but a book making center would certainly enhance my options of educating my students in a more meaningful way. These materials can be used with each and every grade level of students as well as each and every individual level of student.
When students have meaningful learning in schools they go home and teach or share with the other members of their household. Through my experience in the classroom I have found that, especially in book making, my children love to read and share their own work. Reading another author's book is great fun too, but there's something special about when you make it yourself.
With the materials requested in this grant I will set up a book making center in my classroom. I will do this because I believe my students will learn better by doing and being active participants in their education. They will write, revise, edit and either type their own drafts on the computer or re-write them in their best handwriting, and then publish their work in the book making center. These materials are items I cannot pay for out of my own pocket and my limited supply budget does not stretch far enough to make activities like this a reality. I am requesting a book binding machine, book spines, thick colored paper, fancy scissors and special glue for book making.
Making a library of learning is an awesome concept for my emergent language learners with the right support and materials. I know that the literature my students make can and will be read and enjoyed in their homes. These books can be vehicles to teach their family members both the English language as well as content material. Potentially these books will be saved and kept as special mementos of their education.
Please consider funding this proposal. A book making center would provide many students the opportunity and resources to make books. These books in turn can become well loved, well read and well appreciated pieces of literature in households that don't always have enough books or meaningful family experiences.
