My students need 9 Math materials, including Giant Magnetic Place Value Blocks, a set of Hands-On Problem Solving Books and a How Long Is It? Measurement Center.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 3rd grade at a poverty-level school, but my students are bright, inquisitive and passionate about the world around them.
Without a doubt, the students in my class enjoy learning about numbers. They know that they are good with computing so they enjoy the quick drills and math practice worksheets. However, many of them don't have the background knowledge to make the connection of math to everyday situations. They lack the hands-on knowledge which makes math "real". Many of these students don't have prior experiences doing such things as weighing items, taking measurements, building fractions or solving critical thinking math problems.
Giving these students the opportunity to experience math would be so compassionate and rewarding. For my students, I wish I could present to them a hands-on math center stocked with items that would make math connect to their world. Some of the items I am asking for are a measurement set, fraction boards, and problem-solving manipulatives.
Your kindness and assistance is paramount in making this an educational reality for the students.
