My students need a Toaster Oven, Silicone cooking Utensils, Electric Counter Top Burner, Food Storage Containers, and a Cookbook for Teens to become self-sufficient with personal financial literacy and kitchen area to create simple recipe.
My class is diverse because it a Special Education Resource Class. My students, all have individual needs that need to met through specialized curriculum in academics and life skills instruction. I teach Reading/ELA/Math to multi-level grades and abilities at the same time with differentiation according to their ability and the instructional goals in which I use daily in class.
My students are amazing, hard working, and strive to please everyone in their world.
They need life skills incorporated to meet real-world challenges that includes financial literacy, time, the ability to be self-sufficient and learning measurement to be successful in real world. Teaching the students to survive and take care of themselves is most important to us a educators and family.
My Project
This year long project, "Making a difference in the life of a child" is designed for the development of personal financial literacy and self-sufficiency to meet the challenges faced in the real world. This project will work on math skills needed to follow a recipe, order from a menu, buy groceries from a store, and experience cooking simple meals in which students will use recipes, decide a grocery list of things needed to prepare, then prepare for classmates to enjoy.
Learning can be fun and inspiring when the children participate in life changing experiences.
So, as educators, we must look for ways to be that inspiration for each of our students.
Materials needed to complete this task/project are items for a kitchen area. We now have in place a small refrigerator, a microwave, running water, and a cabinet to store our supplies. We need cooking utensils, toaster oven, and possibly a hot plate to learn how to cook on a stove top with supervision always. We will use simple cook books to learn the process of preparing a dish/ meal. The goal is to experience cooking at least once a month with much planning before each experience, which will be a life-learning lesson that could be used at home later. As an educator, it is important that we present skills that will carry our students throughout their entire life not just for a grade but for a new way to look at their future.
