The students in my classes come from low socioeconomic homes and are very diverse. Many students come from homes where managing money and resources is a challenge, which is why learning these techniques at a young age is so important.
An integral part of the Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) program is the clothing and textiles unit.
In this unit, the students are taught sewing techniques, and get to create projects based on what they've learned.
Students at my school are inundated with curriculum and as a result, don't get to experience many hands on activities. As a new school, we are very limited in supplies, which hinders the students' learning. My students are excited to learn the skills associated with Family and Consumer Sciences.
My Project
My students will use these materials to learn multiple sewing techniques and apply them by creating a product of their very own. Many of my students thrive when it comes to hands on learning, not to mention sewing is a great life skill. Whether they want to be a fashion designer, go into the military, or just learn everyday sewing and mending basics, these materials will help.
Some of the materials such as the felt, markers and muslin will be used to create a practice fabric so the students can learn and demonstrate their understanding of the stitches.
The fabric, scissors, and seam rippers will be used for their final projects, hand sewn pillows.
The storage bins will also enable us to store our projects and materials in between classes. The materials and tools will be used to help practice, create, and store their projects. From start to finish, we need these materials to learn, and create.
With these materials, the students will be able to engage in hands on learning, and take pride in the work they create.
These materials are essential to the Family and Consumer Science curriculum and the development of the students.
