Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is into their second year together and I have seen family engagement grow very strong by extending our time together. However, despite their deep care for their students’ learning and positive relationships, the communication between home and school is still very challenging. The parents of my students this year speak 8 different languages, including several languages we have no access to translation for. My students work incredibly hard and they all know their individual goals for growth and success this year. They are enthusiastic and want to learn and grow in school and are so proud when I communicate their growth and success to their parents!
My Project
Communication is so important in order to work together with students’ families, and yet we have eight different languages in students’ homes this year and no one who can translate many of them. I have access to so much data that can clearly show how a student is doing without words. And, I often make graphics like charts or graphs to illustrate students’ levels and needs. However, I have an unreliable black and white printer and almost all meaning is lost when the graphics come out in grey (or, sometimes not at all)! Communicating how students are doing in school is so critical, and yet it is often nearly impossible in my classroom. Working with English Language Learners, I often tap in to the power of color to illustrate information. It is even more so for parents, who often don’t speak any English. A color printer would not be a luxury in our classroom, but an essential tool to bring data and information to life for parents and families and strengthen the school/home connection.
