Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Times are really tough in the Bronx. My students are trapped in small, overcrowded apartments. Many of my students help take care of younger siblings and have a lot of household chores. It is hard for them to find a place to work and focus. My students and their families have always struggled, but now these issues are critical. I frequently share information about food banks with my students and they e-mail me privately to ask for more information. I am extremely worried about them!
I have been trying to hold Google Meet sessions for my students, but have faced many challenges.
I don't have the proper equipment to teach my students. I have been making drawings on paper and holding them up to my laptop's camera, but this doesn't work well. All of my drawings appear reversed and they are hard to read. My students are extremely eager to learn, but it is frustrating when I can't deliver the lessons they deserve.
My Project
I want to use a web cam, whiteboard and dry erase markers to create a classroom at home. Using these materials, I can teach my students during Google Meet classes just like when we were all together at school. During class, I always drew pictures on the board to help my students understand complicated science concepts.
These materials will help me recreate the classroom learning experience for my students using Google Meet.
Even though my students and I are not physically together, we will still be able to do great learning.
Distance learning has been really tough and my students crave any bit of normalcy that they can get. Having an "at home classroom" will really help them learn better. They have so many challenges in their lives. I want to make education as easy and meaningful for them as possible.
