Making a 21st Century Classroom Complete Through Flexible Seating!
My students need seating such as stools and wobble cushion that is going to help support their individual needs and most importantly, engage them in learning.
Our school has around 870 students, and we are located in a rural community. My students are 10- and 11-year-olds in their last year of elementary school. They come from different economic backgrounds, with many receiving free or reduced price lunch.
Many of my students lack experiences that would help them develop cognitively, socially, creatively, and academically.
They can be leaders, problem-solvers, creators, scientists, and more when we give them the right resources. I want to see them shine as they head to middle school.
My Project
As an adult, I know I have preferred seating when it comes to working on a task independently or in a group. My students also have those same preferences, and flexible seating can help a student be more engaged when working in a group and/or independently. As my student are in their last year of elementary school, I want them to become the best independent and life-long learners possible.
With the variety of seating below, it will help create workstations within my classroom, where students will choose each day the one that will work best for them.
One workstation would include a tall round table with two tall stools for students to have a higher seating area. I would also like to provide my students with lower seating areas where the tables in our classroom would be lowered, and I would use the round wiggle seats for those that like to be seated more on the floor rather than in a chair. I have also asked for some padded floor seats so that students can sit in their own independent area when working. Lastly, I have asked for a small coffee table and side table to help provide additional workstations for students to sit in smaller groups around the room.
The traditional classroom with desks/tables and chairs is no longer the best setup for a lot of our students. A 21st century classroom isn't all about technology and teaching our students how to use tools that they will be using in their future. It is also about creating a classroom that is going to be suited for their needs and help them dive into their learning. Engaging them is what comes first!
