My students need materials that allow them to build on their creativity. We are going to build a dedicated STEM Makerspace area in our library so students have access to these materials every time they visit.
My students are from all over the world. Some come to us speaking English, but many don't. My school is in a very low-income area, with around 90% of the students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. That doesn't stop them from being amazing thinkers, creators, artists, scientists, etc. They are very capable and creative.
I want to help my students learn to harness their creativity and build on it even further by creating a dedicated Makerspace in our library.
I want my students to be successful in school, but more importantly, in the future. In order to do that, they need to realize just how gifted they are. A child who may struggle with the language may be able to build a circuit in no time flat! A child who struggles with math may be able to create an artistic masterpiece like no one else! They just need the opportunity to put those skills to use more often. I want them to see that the library can be a place of art, engineering, and science, as well as books and technology.
My Project
We will be using these materials to create STEM bins in our new Makerspace area to encourage creative and critical thinking skills. Students will be able to use these items to learn about coding, be artistic, and even do some engineering!
Students need to recognize their own individual strengths, and gain the motivation to build on that.
Each item will be placed in a bin with task cards to give students a challenge. Most of these will be independent activities, however, some, such as the EVO bot, will require more guidance and prior teaching. Either way, students will be working on STEM skills!
