I teach at a small rural school filled with fun, creative, and motivated students. Our high school enrollment is just under 200 students. These students come from five different towns separated, in some cases, by 20 minutes of rural driving. Our school has strived to be a leader in education and innovation and has developed many new programs activities, and initiatives that put the students first.
Innovation is essential for teaching 21st-century skills to 21st-century students.
My students are amazing and they jump at the chance to try new and innovative ways to learn. My goal is to provide them with the opportunities to learn both content and skills in the most engaging ways possible.
My Project
How do you combine history, coding, and 3d printing? Make a map! My students will soon be embarking on a project in which they research a medieval village which they will replicate in Minecraft EDU. While this was an engaging activity years ago when I first attempted it in my 7th-grade class, this activity needs an upgrade. This year, they will build the city, based on research, in Minecraft as usual. With the items requested here, the whole activity will get an upgrade: an interactive 3d map.
This year, students will 3d print structures from Minecraft and code the Makey-Makey to play student-created descriptions of the structures and locations on the map.
In this project, students will research using primary sources, make a replica of a medieval manor in MinecraftEDU and then print out the key structures using this (and the old, existing, 3d printer). They will make a museum-style interactive map to display this village. The map will include buttons connected to the Makey-Makey and Raspberry Pi that viewers will press. These will trigger narrations about the building or location chosen. This map will be displayed at the upcoming community open house for guests to the school to see.
