I work in a large, high-needs school with a diverse student body. I teach six sections of Technology Education to 6th, 7th and 8th graders with students from the basic to gifted level. Eleven percent of my students are English Language Learners with the majority at the intermediate level.
Learning about technology without access to engaging resources is exceedingly difficult.
My students understand technology as users but are challenged to understand technology as creators. I would like to expand my ability to engage my students as creators, making them better prepared as learners and citizens.
My Project
Makey Makey boards can be used to create a wide variety of interactive designs, from wall mounted pianos to interactive art. They encourage students to investigate how computer code can be used to create a real world experience for their end users. Students learn how keyboard inputs control a computer; how and why circuits work; what materials are conductive; how to design an interface for ease of use, and more.
These invention kits serve as a base for designing and building student projects that incorporate all aspects of STEAM.
Makey Makey boards would be a valuable tool in my classroom toolbox as my students make the leap from digital consumers to tech innovators.
