My students attend school in Santa Clara, which is smack dab in the middle of Silicon Valley. This means that they can exist at the crossroads of technology and innovation while also experiencing hardship and a high cost of living. While some of my students live in single-family homes, others share a two-bedroom apartment with multiple families. Many of the families in my classroom are limited in their ability to donate money towards improving (let alone innovating) current classroom conditions or towards updating equipment as they often work two jobs to make ends meet.
Our school community is newly established, but we are committed to serving students of all walks and needs, including BIPOC students, neurodiverse and disabled students, and students who are from differing socioeconomic backgrounds through culturally competent and standards-based curriculum and practices.
We work hard in my personal classroom community to embrace the identities my students hold and to respect everyone's individual needs as no two students bring the same life experiences to the table. We try to champion "personal best" over "being the best" as everyone's abilities and talents are different.
My Project
These Makey Makey will help put everyone on even footing in our technology and coding curriculum. Having these Makey Makey sets will make coding and a deeper understanding of technology accessible to everyone who comes to my class. For my students who come from a wide range of backgrounds, from students who struggle to have reliable internet and share one device at home to students whose parents word in tech, these kits will help make coding engaging for everyone no matter their entry knowledge. The fact that these kits are hands-on and durable means that they will engage my students while also lasting for future classes to come.
