My students need 9 Makey Makey kits to promote creativity and discovery!
This project expired on July 22, 2018.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
We are a traditional high school in an urban district, and the school has recently left turn-around status. The students at the school are about 90% minority, and over 80% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. In addition, over 42% of the students are classified as English Language Learners. My students need to see themselves as STEM masters so that they choose a career in STEM. The U.S. needs more STEM graduates and especially STEM graduates that look like my students!
I'm on a mission to create a STEM lab that facilitates student learning!
I want to purchase Makey Makeys so students see themselves as creators, builders, and future engineers! We will use these Makey Makeys in our STEM lab to promote inquiry, the engineering process, and collaboration.
Nintendo, Sony, Xbox, Atari...they have one thing, among others, in common: a unique method of controlling their respective games. But, what if a person, or a child for that matter, could CREATE that controller? That is what a Makey Makey can do. By using conductive objects and simple wiring, students can make unique controls by which games can be played. Whether it is a game previously-created, a video game, or even a game invented by a student, Makey Makey is a gateway to STEM engagement in fields of computer science, mathematics, engineering, and numerous other disciplines.
How many of my students want to come to class?
All of them. How many of my students help their groupmates? All of them. How many of my students experienced increases in problem-solving acuity and scientific method? All of them. I want to continue to prove that engagement in STEM content makes for well-rounded students who not only retain knowledge, but can apply it in the future as STEM professionals.
