Children are laughing. There is a buzz in the air that can only come from spirited discussion. As students listened to the sound of a humpback whale, they oohed and ached, intently following its journey.
Growing up on an isolated island, my students don't have the money to travel around the world and see beyond 4,000 square miles.
Yet, their passion for learning knows no bounds. They are excited to do a play on the three branches of government. They jump up in joy when reading about how other children are saving animals. They gasp in empathy when they see trees and animal habitats being cut down. I am truly blessed to be working with students who care about their community and the world around them.
My Project
Students will be designing end of the year capstone projects that align with what the community needs. They will have the opportunity to explore what community members' greatest needs are and then design a solution with the Makey Makey kits. For example, if the local grocery store CEO tells my students that a huge need in the store is that customers are in lines that are too long, my students would design a solution that would help solve the problem.
It will truly make a difference in my students' learning because it will add passion and purpose to the classroom.
The projects will allow my students to apply the math, reading, and science standards they have learned all year to a meaningful cause. At the end of the project, students will lead an exhibition of projects with all community members invited.
