I teach academically gifted students in grades 3-5 at two rural schools near a moderately sized city. One of the schools is a Title I school where all the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are generally curious, highly motivated learners who love to learn in new ways and ponder deep questions through meaningful experiences.
Because of this, I am constantly challenged to find fun and innovative activities that enrich my students and extend their knowledge in highly engaging ways. Due to the low socio-economic level of many of the students, they are often not afforded many learning experiences outside of the classroom setting.
My Project
Rubik's cubes have remained a beloved toy by children for many years. However, there are so many educational uses for these cubes besides just being puzzles to solve. STEM encompasses almost every part of our life. Makey Makeys are some of the most highly rated STEM materials on the market
With this grant, my students will use the materials to extend their knowledge of electrical circuits and mathematical/problem solving concepts.
They will create beautiful art mosaics, and develop algorithms for solving the cube. By using Makey Makey, students will become familiar with circuits and electricity in a fun, exciting, and meaningful way.
They will have opportunities to work independently, in pairs, or in cooperative learning groups using a variety of learning styles and strategies.
My students love to learn in fun and innovative ways and these cubes will definitely spark their interest and keep them actively engaged and learning in meaningful ways. Also,
If my students are awarded this grant I plan to set up a station in the classroom where students can explore Makey Makey. As a result, they will become better prepared for the future and hopefully develop a passion for STEM and understanding how electricity and circuits work.
