I have a very diverse group of learners. I am the librarian at 2 low-income schools with 85% of the students qualifying for free and reduced-price lunch. This diverse group of students comes from bilingual households, struggles with language at school, lives in high poverty/low-income households, and has various reading levels. However, these students also want to learn. I work hard to build a love of reading with my students.
I work hard to provide equitable resources they may not otherwise receive, usually high-interest literature, but I am currently building a "Makerspace" for the students to challenge themselves through critical thinking and problem-solving.
I am trying to stock it with makerspace supplies and coding materials. I am excited to help students engage in creative problem-solving.
My Project
Evo Ozobots will promote a creative, inventive, and critical thinkers. Evo Ozobots are robots for the next generation of creators. Evo Ozbots can be coded two ways: online with OzoBlockly and screen-free with Color Codes. I want students to go from consuming technology to creating it. These kits will help my classes to go from just coding online to creating code for robots. Snap Circuits will also promote problem solving through tinkering and critical thinking. The pipe cleaners and duct tape are staple pieces for creativity and tinkering in a Makerspace and will be used for many innovative inventions.
These materials will make coding come to life for my young creators, and develop skills for future jobs requiring 21st Century skills.
The philosophy behind Makerspace Education is that children can create and build anything given the material, time, and space. The Makerspace is an area where students can invent using a variety of new or reusable materials as well as technology. Makerspace activities provide students the opportunity to collaborate and develop 21st Century and STEM skills. Students will solve real world problems. Snap Circuits will also promote problem solving through tinkering and critical thinking.
Students will be able to discover talents and interests in themselves that they did not know they had.
