Our school is a low-income, high-poverty elementary school of over 800 students. My students are faced with a wide range of challenges from fluctuating caretakers, to homelessness, to learning and developmental disabilities, to not having adequate food or clothing. With these adversities come along behaviors and needs that interfere with learning. Students as young as 4 walk into our building every day carrying enormous weight on their shoulders that many of us have never had to worry about.
Their backgrounds are diverse, but they all demonstrate a love for learning.
They have dreams of growing up to become what they see in textbooks, children's books, television, or movies. I hope to expand their dreams with the resources I provide in the classroom.
My Project
I am setting up a Makerspace Station in my classroom for the first time this year. The materials I requested in this project will give my students the opportunity to build, create, and explore with more freedom. The blocks, straws, and magnetic pieces will be the basic building pieces my 5th graders can use for an engineering challenge or as creative free time. The STEM kits give a specific challenge for my students that are also connected to our 5th-grade content. The storage bins will ensure my students keep all the materials in proper working order.
The Makerspace resources will give my students a chance to create freely without typical classroom assignment restraints.
They will have a chance to construct a design and improve it through testing. These materials will challenge the students to engineer a solution where there is more than one answer. I want my students to be independent, creative, and willing to conquer science and math challenges. These resources will help me foster an inventive and problem-solving environment!
