My students need an iPad Mini, a Sphero Robotic Ball and littleBits Electronic Building Blocks to foster STEM/STEAM learning, collaborative teamwork, critical thinking and build excitement for possible future careers.
My students range from Kindergarten to 8th grade and need open-ended, hands-on tools to understand, explore and innovate in their new makerspace!
We are a small International Baccalaureate school who values and thus requires using the design cycle to investigate, plan, create and evaluate.
Students love exploring new technologies and learning how things work.
Our makerspace will provide opportunities to assemble low tech and high tech materials into brand new creations that they will share with each other, our community, and ideally the world!
In my Technology/Design classes, the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education), standards provide our framework to develop skills and knowledge students need to learn effectively, and live productively in an increasingly global and digital society.
My Project
Our class objective is to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century. These materials make programming fun and invite invention, teamwork, and perseverance by making learning engaging and entertaining! We will use the iPad Mini to program the app enabled Sphero Robotic Ball, film stop motion videos and document student learning to share with a local and global audience. The award winning, reusable littleBits are an essential tool to explain the basics of circuitry and systems, with hands-on learning for younger students, while challenging older ones to connect their inventions with computer programming. Students will engage with electronics using the Gizmos and Gadgets kit while being empowered to design and engineer solutions to real-world problems using the littleBits cloudBit Starter kit. My K-8 students will be able to create an invention that they can then connect to the internet and control with the iPad Mini from across the school. Kids have created a remote fish feeder for when they are on vacation or enabled a lamp to turn on/off via text. These requested materials will embolden and ignite an interest in technology that could lead to a career in the booming tech industry in our city. These inspired students will be better prepared for success in the global workforce of tomorrow!
