Makerspace Library

My students need books for inspiration and instruction. Now that we have a room for the Makerspace, I am excited that we also can have a Makerspace Library where students can explore different disciplines.

My Students

I teach Maker Education at an elementary through middle school in Oakland, CA. Our student body is made of students from all nationalities. Most of our diverse population qualify for free or reduced price school lunches. We are pretty much a microcosm of our city, Oakland, California, and we benefit from the rich culture that Oakland has to offer.

We are inventors, creators, builders, tinkerers, makers,artists, engineers, scientists and more.

Our school is committed to giving students a chance to take charge of their own learning, make decisions and help one another. Our MakerSpace is a perfect place for this kind of collaboration and innovation.

My Project

The "Maker Mindset" that we are trying to cultivate includes qualities such as creativity, persistence, initiative, resilience and exploration. Our Makerspace doesn't have computers for the students, so books will be a rich source of research and inspiration.

The Makerspace Library will be a place where students can go to explore new disciplines, read about the struggles and triumphs of past inventors, and understand the value of the "Maker Mindset."

What better way to encourage students to "open new windows" than to provide them with rich reading material, exciting illustrations and examples of what others have done and what is possible?
