Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the STEM lab teacher at a Title I school in a large urban school district. I teach all students, K-5, in my school. My students come to me for science every day. They learn about science through a variety of formats - texts, experiments, challenges, videos, and technology. We use chromebooks and iPads on a daily basis to supplement our learning.
My students enjoy science and love that we learn about it in so many different ways.
Their diversity is reflected in the diverse ways that they learn. My students would love to be able to have all the resources they need to learn everything they can.
My Project
Makerspace allows students the freedom to build, explore, and problem solve with their choice of materials. This project will provide an additional tool (Legos) to be added to the Makerspace at our school.
Adding Legos to our Makerspace will provide students with another tool to collaborate, create, explore, and problem solve.
Each one of my almost 900 students will use these Legos each week to complete STEM challenges that require communication and collaboration among partners/groups as they come to creative solutions. Many of the STEM challenges are linked to literacy activities in their homerooms that carry over to their time in the STEM lab. Integrating literacy, science, and math makes their learning so much more meaningful.
